Wood chip moisture content and its management play a crucial role in many sectors, from paper production to wood products manufacturing. In a recent study, researchers evaluated the effectiveness of a dielectric meter as a tool to predict moisture content, with promising results for industrial practice.

Wood chip moisture content measurement and the experiments

The experiment used a dielectric meter to assess the moisture content of Pinus sp. and Eucalyptus sp. wood chips supplied by eight different suppliers. The researchers compiled a robust database of twelve measurement sets, ensuring the diversity and representativeness of the samples.

The study’s approach was to use the dielectric meter’s input parameter (capacitance) to predict the measured value (moisture). This made it possible to build supplier-specific curves by linear regression, revealing a strong positive linear correlation. The scatter of data points on each curve followed a 45° trend, underlining the method’s accuracy and reliability.

A significant finding was that the dielectric constant decreased as wood chip moisture content dropped during drying. This provides valuable insight into the dielectric properties of wood chips at different moisture stages.

Study results

The results showed coefficients of determination (R²) above 0.80 for the curves, indicating a strong correlation between dielectric properties and moisture content. This suggests that a dielectric meter can be a fast, practical and cost-effective way to predict the moisture content of wood chips.

The potential impact goes beyond the lab, giving industry an effective tool to optimize drying, reduce waste and improve product quality. Fast, reliable moisture prediction based on dielectric properties shows how this study contributes to more efficient and sustainable industrial practices.
