Wood: How to Determine Wood Moisture Content

Wood: How to Determine Wood Moisture Content

Wood - 17/08/2023

Wood moisture content is a vital variable that directly affects the quality, durability and use of final products. In this article we look at how wood moisture is measured, from traditional methods to the latest innovations, with a focus on Marrari’s portable meters.

Why measure wood moisture?

Before looking at the methods, it is worth understanding why measuring wood moisture is so important. Excess moisture can cause warping, cracking and fungal growth, while over-drying can cause checks, distortion and processing problems. The right moisture level is the key to durable, high-quality products.

Traditional methods for measuring wood moisture

  1. Oven-dry (gravimetric) method: The reference method compares the weight of the wood before and after drying in an oven. The weight difference shows how much water the wood contained. Although accurate, it is slow and unsuitable for fast control in industrial processes.
  2. Electrical resistance method: This method uses the change in the wood’s electrical resistance with moisture. By driving electrodes into the wood, the resistance is measured and the moisture content inferred. However, you need to account for interference from temperature and species, as well as the holes left by the electrodes.
  3. Dielectric method: Water changes the dielectric properties of wood. This method measures that change (dielectric constant) with a contact sensor, without piercing the piece, and converts it into moisture content.

Innovation with Marrari portable moisture meters

In a constantly evolving environment, the timber industry is looking to improve measurement to maximize quality and efficiency. In this context, Marrari’s portable meters and in-line meters play a key role.

Marrari portable meters: transforming moisture measurement

  1. Dielectric measurement technology: Marrari portable meters use dielectric reading technology. This non-invasive approach enables fast, accurate measurements without damaging the piece, supporting better-informed real-time decisions.
  2. Flexibility and portability: Practicality is key. Marrari portable meters are designed for mobility, allowing measurements directly in the field and saving time and resources. We also offer in-line meters that mount directly on the production line for constant, accurate and fast readings.
  3. Versatile measurement modes: Different woods have different properties. Marrari meters offer measurement modes for different species and products, ensuring accurate results whatever the material.
  4. Connectivity and digital data: Beyond collecting data, Marrari portable meters make it easier to interpret with the UmiData software. With digital displays and data logging software, measurements can be recorded and monitored in an organized way.
