With the rapid advance of technology, industry could not afford to fall behind and, whatever the sector, now has to handle large volumes of data generated every moment. It was in this context that the first industrial supervision systems spread, in the 1970s and 1980s.
What is an industrial supervision system?
Industrial supervision systems, also known as HMI/SCADA (Human-Machine Interface and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition), are, in short, systems designed to capture production process information and store it in a database. This information is collected by sensors and actuators installed in the process. These systems can also communicate with other systems using standard protocols, which makes data management easier.
The system also analyses the stored information and displays the results on customized screens on the user’s computer, helping not only with process control but also with cost reduction. Data acquisition becomes faster and more reliable, cutting the time spent compiling and correcting data, since the system is less prone to the reading and typing errors of manual work.
Benefits of supervision systems
Supervision systems bring several benefits to an organization, beyond cost reduction and data generation. Some of them are:
- Trend analysis;
- Alarms;
- Remote process operation;
- Reports and charts;
- Fewer stoppages and higher productivity;
- Higher product quality.
These systems are especially important in processes that require round-the-clock control, such as electricity transmission and distribution, water and wastewater treatment, buildings, hotels and, above all, industry.
With this in mind, Marrari created PSi4, its industrial SCADA supervision system. See Marrari’s software solutions.
